The Cecil Court Problem: Cleaning Carpet in a Shop Full of Paper That Can’t Get Damp
Twelve feet of frontage, a shop floor you could cross in four paces, and every inch of wall from skirting to ceiling carrying stock. Somewhere in there is a carpet runner down the middle that has taken forty years of people shuffling sideways along the shelves, and it is grey where it should be green.
The bookseller wants it cleaned. Reasonably enough.
But the carpet is not the job. In a room like that the carpet is a secondary consideration, and what you are really being asked to manage is the moisture content of a sealed box full of vellum, paper, leather and hide glue. Get that wrong and you will have done far more damage to the shop than a dirty runner ever did. This is the sort of work where the skill is mostly in what you decide not to do.
What Are You Actually Protecting in a Shop Like This?
Everything on those shelves is hygroscopic. Paper, board, cloth, leather, parchment and vellum all take up moisture from the air and give it back, and they change dimension when they do it. That is not a defect. It is simply what organic material does, and a book that has sat in a stable room off St Martin’s Lane for thirty years has reached a comfortable equilibrium with that room.
Anything you do that shifts the air in that shop drags every object on every shelf along with it.
Vellum, and why ten points matters
Vellum is the one to think about first. It is prepared animal skin, essentially collagen, and it responds to relative humidity faster and more visibly than almost anything else in the room. Raise the RH sharply and a vellum binding takes up moisture, expands unevenly across the grain and cockles. Drop it sharply and it contracts and curls, and it can pull a text block out of shape or split at the joints. Limp vellum bindings are worse than boarded ones.
Books do not need a specific number so much as they need stability. Something in the region of 45 to 55 per cent is what conservators aim for, and the damage generally comes from the speed of the change rather than the destination. A shop that sits at 52 all winter and then goes to 68 in three hours because someone put a truck-mount wand through it has done something to that stock, whether or not anyone notices this week.
At sustained high humidity you also start worrying about mould on paper and leather, which is a slower problem and a much more expensive one.
Why Is a Standard Rinse a Conservation Risk in a Sealed Shop?
Because hot water extraction is, from the room’s point of view, a humidifier.
Even a well-executed extraction leaves the carpet damp, and every drop of that dampness has to evaporate into the air of the room before the carpet is dry. In a normal house that air goes out through gaps, doors, windows and a leaky building fabric. A small lock-up shop with one door, one sealed window and no through ventilation has nowhere to put it.
Doing the sums before the wand comes out
Twenty square metres of carpet retaining even half a litre per square metre is ten litres of water going into the air of a room that might hold sixty cubic metres. You do not need to be precise about it to see the shape of the problem. In a closed shop that will take the humidity up by twenty points or more within an hour and hold it there for the rest of the day, and every book in the place will be taking it up.
So the first piece of kit on site is not a machine. It is a hygrometer, ideally two, left in the shop for a few days beforehand to establish what normal looks like. Then a dehumidifier running for twenty-four to forty-eight hours before anybody cleans anything, to pull the baseline down and give yourself headroom. Then you agree a ceiling with the owner – a number above which you stop, whatever stage you are at – and you watch it throughout. Writing that number down beforehand matters more than it sounds, because in the middle of a job it is very easy to tell yourself another ten minutes will be fine.
I would also pick the season. A dry cold spell in February is a much easier day than a muggy afternoon in August, when the outside air over central London is already carrying more moisture than the shop is.
Which Methods Are Left, and What Do They Cost You?
Dry compound cleaning is the obvious first choice. A slightly moist absorbent carrier is worked into the pile, given a few minutes to bind the soil, and vacuumed out. The free water involved is negligible, the shop is walkable straight away, and the humidity trace barely moves. For a bookshop runner it is very often the whole answer.
Low-moisture encapsulation is the step up when the traffic lane needs more. Applied through a fine sprayer at genuinely low volume, agitated with a soft brush rather than anything aggressive, dry inside the hour with a bit of gentle air movement. It suspends more soil than dry compound does and it still barely touches the room’s moisture load.
Air movers need care in this environment. Loose leaves, unbound ephemera, print racks and anything in an open box will move, and blowing dust off the floor and onto the shelves is a poor trade. Low speed, aimed along the floor, never up into open shelving, and a HEPA air scrubber running alongside to catch what the agitation lifts.
The compromise nobody says out loud
Dry methods leave more soil in the carpet than extraction does. That is simply true, and cleaners who claim otherwise are selling something. Encapsulation on a forty-year-old runner will lift the surface and the mid-pile and it will leave material down at the base of the yarn that a proper flush would have taken out.
In this shop, that is the correct answer. You are accepting a less thorough carpet clean in exchange for not putting the stock at risk, and anyone who cannot explain that trade-off to the owner in plain language should not be quoting the job. I would rather deliver an eighty per cent result on a runner than a hundred per cent result and a cockled vellum binding.
What Is Actually in That Runner After Four Decades?
Less of what people expect and more of what they do not.
There are no food spills to speak of and very few liquid stains. What there is instead is grit. Fine mineral grit tracked in off Charing Cross Road and St Martin’s Lane on the soles of everyone who has come in for a browse, working down into the pile base and grinding at the fibre every time somebody shifts their weight to read a spine. That grit is why the traffic lane is not just dirty but physically worn – the pile is abraded and crushed as well as soiled, and no cleaning method reverses abrasion.
I always tell people this before I start, because a crushed lane will still look different to the rest of the floor afterwards. It is not soil. It is missing fibre. The carpet under the bottom shelf, six inches away, will show you exactly what the original colour and pile height were.
The dry soil removal, then, is the main event rather than the preliminary. Slow passes with a good HEPA machine, several directions, crevice tool along the plinths and under the bottom shelf as far as the tool will reach. Most of the improvement in a room like this comes from that work rather than from anything in a bottle.
Red rot and paper dust
Two things you find here and almost nowhere else. Paper dust settles constantly off open stock and is fine, dry and easy to lift once you know it is there. Red rot is different – the powdery rust-coloured residue that comes off deteriorated vegetable-tanned leather bindings, mostly nineteenth century, which drifts down onto the floor beneath the shelves and gets walked along the runner.
Do not wet it. It moves and it marks, and it is the sort of stain that becomes obvious after everything has dried. Vacuum it, gently, and leave it at that.
How Do You Get Kit Into a Pedestrian Court?
This is the bit that decides the price and nobody thinks about it until the morning of the job.
Cecil Court is pedestrian, gated at both ends, with no vehicle access at all. The nearest realistic stopping point is on St Martin’s Lane or round on Charing Cross Road, both of which are restricted, both of which are busy from early, and neither of which lets you sit with a van door open for three hours. A truck-mount hose run is forty to sixty metres through public footfall before you even reach the shop door, which in practice means it is not happening. Even if the hose reached, you would be laying it across a pedestrian route in the middle of theatreland and taking responsibility for everyone who trips on it.
So everything comes in on a trolley. Portable machine, dry compound applicator, vacuum, dehumidifier, scrubber, hygrometers – carried in past a doorway barely wide enough for two people, into a shop where nothing can be moved because the shelving is fixed and the stock has nowhere to go.
That last point shapes the whole approach. You clean around and beneath fixed shelving rather than clearing the room, which means working in sections, which suits the low-moisture methods anyway. And you do it before ten or after six, agreed with the neighbours, because the court is quiet and sound carries.
Then a decent barrier mat at the door, which will do more for that runner over the next five years than anything I can do in a morning.
